Metabarcoding the Antarctic Peninsula biodiversity using a multi-gene approach

چکیده

Abstract Marine sediment communities are major contributors to biogeochemical cycling and benthic ecosystem functioning, but they poorly described, particularly in remote regions such as Antarctica. We analysed patterns drivers of diversity metazoan prokaryotic the Antarctic Peninsula with metabarcoding approaches. Our results show that combined use mitochondrial Cox1, 16S 18S rRNA gene recovered more phyla, from non-metazoan groups, allowed correlation possible interactions between kingdoms. This higher level detection revealed dominance by arthropods not nematodes benthos further eukaryotic was dominated protists: world’s largest reservoir marine diversity. The bacterial family Woeseiaceae described for first time sediments. Almost 50% bacteria 70% taxa were unique each sampled site (high alpha diversity) harboured features local adaptation (niche-driven). main abiotic measured, shaping community structure organic matter, water content mud. Biotic factors included highly abundant fraction, placing protists a bridge kingdom interactions. Meiofauna proposed sentinels identifying anthropogenic-induced changes

Benthic Megafaunal Community Structure and Biodiversity Along a Sea Ice Gradient on the Western Antarctic Peninsula:

The Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is experiencing some of the fastest rates of regional warming in the world, resulting in the collapse of ice shelves, warming ocean temperatures, and increased melt and retreat of glaciers. Winter sea ice coverage in the waters off the WAP has decreased in duration and extent over the last half century. The significant changes observed off the WAP are extre...

Leg 178 Antarctic Peninsula

Leg 178 will drill eight sites off the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula to provide a highresolution record of Antarctic continental climate over the past 6-10 m.y. and a direct check on the presumed glacio-eustatic origin of global sea-level change over the same period. Moreover, it is an essential preliminary to the more difficult task of extracting the complete Cenozoic record of Ant...

Next-generation monitoring of aquatic biodiversity using environmental DNA metabarcoding.

Global biodiversity in freshwater and the oceans is declining at high rates. Reliable tools for assessing and monitoring aquatic biodiversity, especially for rare and secretive species, are important for efficient and timely management. Recent advances in DNA sequencing have provided a new tool for species detection from DNA present in the environment. In this study, we tested whether an enviro...

Marine pelagic ecosystems: the west Antarctic Peninsula.

The marine ecosystem of the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) extends from the Bellingshausen Sea to the northern tip of the peninsula and from the mostly glaciated coast across the continental shelf to the shelf break in the west. The glacially sculpted coastline along the peninsula is highly convoluted and characterized by deep embayments that are often interconnected by channels that facilitate...
